Though he can remember up to about 15 minutes prior to the accident, Charlie has no memory of the subsequent six weeks of his life—and that may be fortunate. Rushed to Weill Cornell Medical College of New York Presbyterian Hospital, he required a decompressive craniectomy, a procedure in which nearly half of his skull was temporarily removed to accommodate the extreme swelling of his brain.

A month after his graduation, Charlie Maddock '04 was hit by a car and suffered an often-fatal traumatic brain injury. Two years later, in 2006, he founded the Charles Maddock Foundation, a nonprofit foundation that supports patients who have suffered brain trauma.
